OKLAHOMA CITY (JR) – Flogistix has announced plans to deploy uncrewed aerial vehicles in hunting down and identifying “fugitive methane leaks” for energy industry customers.
In a release, the Oklahoma City-based company said it has partnered with Commaris, a Houston-based provider of UAVs used for various agriculture, mapping, security and other commercial purposes. Plans are to deploy the Commaris Seeker aircraft.
The UAV is billed as an innovative, electric, fixed-wing/vertical takeoff and landing hybrid capable of more than three hours of flight time without battery change. With a wingspan of 15 feet, it supports multiple payload configurations and can carry up to 10 pounds at speeds of up to 75 mph.
Flogistix, which specializes in well-head compression, vapor recovery applications and methane detection, operates in nearly every major U.S. shale play and basin and provides service through 14 regional field offices and warehouses located in seven states. CEO Mims Talton said the “AirMethane” initiative will take the company to a “new level.” According to the release, UAVs equipped with the technologically advanced detection systems will aid in identifying fugitive methane leaks, resulting in customer savings and benefits to the environment.
“Utilizing (Optical Gas Imaging) camera, sniffer, and laser detection capabilities, our drones are able to pinpoint leaks with precise accuracy allowing for immediate resolution,” the release stated.
Inspection reports and videos will be made available online via Flux, the company’s performance dashboard, allowing for timely regulatory reporting and compliance auditing.
“Utilizing our methane detection methods is not new to the industry,” Talton said. “However, mounting these detection devices on a drone lifts our service to the next level. Our leak detection solutions are the most accurate and efficient methods to inspect well pads, pipeline right of ways, compressor stations, and other oil and gas locations. Not only can this method save time, but it is also the safest and most accurate aerial detection available.”
Commaris has the Seeker on display at an Energy & Drone Robotics Summit to run through June 22 at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott in Houston.
“Our UAV is designed to perform a wide variety of commercial inspection operations,” Commaris President Kevin Colburn said. “Combining it with sensors we are integrating into the platform plus Flogistix’s sector experience, operational acumen, and proven data delivery capabilities, will position both companies to jointly provide value in the rapidly growing field of aerial data collection and delivery.”
